Cortez Masto and Kihuen Join Culinary Union Housekeepers to Call Out Donald Trump's Mistreatment of Las Vegas Hotel Workers

Today, former Nevada Attorney General and U.S. Senate candidate Catherine Cortez Masto, congressional candidate and State Senator Ruben Kihuen, Mexican-American actress Angélica María, and members of the Culinary Union Local 226 called out Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump for his mistreatment of his Trump Hotel employees and his refusal to negotiate a fair contract with them. At the press conference, speakers rebuked Trump's remarks to former Miss Universe winner, Alicia Machada, calling her "Miss Housekeeping" because of her Venezuelan accent. Cortez Masto's opponent, Joe Heck, and Kihuen's opponent, Cresent Hardy, both support Donald Trump for president, despite his blatant disregard for Nevada workers.

"Being a housekeeper is not a job to be disparaged; it is an honest, tireless, and often thankless job," said Cortez Masto. "Our housekeepers, and every other service industry worker, sustain Las Vegas' economy and I am willing to bet that Donald Trump would not survive a day doing their jobs. Donald Trump has shown he does not respect or care about hard working Nevadans and we cannot allow Trump, or his loyal supporter Joe Heck, to be elected and have the chance to mistreat all American workers. As the daughter of a union member, I know how critical unions are to Nevada's economy and, unlike my opponent, I will fight in the U.S. Senate to ensure our workers are empowered and protected."

"To see Donald Trump ignore and mistreat his own employees by refusing to recognize our state's largest union offends me personally," said Kihuen. "My mother has worked as a housekeeper in Las Vegas for 23 years while providing for our family, and she does her job tirelessly, with integrity and self-respect. Trump's blatant disregard for hundreds of employees like my mom has no place in Nevada and no place in our country. But Congressmen Hardy and Heck fully support Donald Trump -- and by endorsing him, they are giving their stamp of approval to his divisive anti-middle class agenda. We can't afford to have a President who acts like a bully, demeaning women and attacking workers everywhere he goes."

"Donald Trump has refused to bargain with employees at his Vegas hotel despite them winning a union election with 53% of the vote," said Yvanna Cancela, Political Director at the Culinary Union Local 226. "Trump is legally required to bargain a contact and he continues to disrespect workers who simply want him to follow the law and negotiate for fair wages and benefits. It is offensive that Congressmen Joe Heck and Cresent Hardy insist on supporting Trump even though Trump has continued to disrespect Nevadans. We need leaders in Washington who are willing to stand up to bullies and billionaires and do what is right for Nevadans. We need leaders like Catherine Cortez Masto and Ruben Kihuen."
