Cortez Masto Meets with UNR Students and Staff to Discuss High Stakes in Election

Today, former Nevada Attorney General and U.S. Senate candidate Catherine Cortez Masto visited her alma mater, the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR), to talk about her commitment to fighting for Nevada's students if elected to the U.S. Senate. Cortez Masto spoke about her work as Attorney General to increase funding for Nevada's Millennium Scholarship, and highlighted how she will fight to address college affordability and student debt in the U.S. Senate.

Cortez Masto noted that while she has the record of solving problems for Nevada students, her opponent, Congressman Joe Heck, has voted for policies in Congress that hurt students and decrease access to higher education. Heck voted to cut funding for Pell Grants, in favor of legislation that could have dramatically increased student loan debt, and opposed efforts to increase regulations on for-profit colleges like Trump University, which prey on students and veterans, leaving them with thousands in debt and useless degrees.

"Nevada's students should not have to mortgage away their future to be able to go to college," said Cortez Masto. "My time at UNR made it possible for me to be where I am today and it is essential that every Nevada student has the opportunity to pursue higher education. As U.S. Senator, I will work to address skyrocketing college costs and student debt, as well as increase access to scholarships and grants. Unlike Joe Heck, who voted to cut funding for Pell Grants, I will make college more affordable and accessible for more Nevadans, not fewer."
