Congresswoman Chellie Pingree issued the following statement about President Obama's decision to designate nearly 5,000 square miles of ocean off the coast of New England as a national marine monument. The Northeast Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument will protect a pristine underwater area that is home to rare species including sea turtles and endangered whales.
"This decision is going to protect one of the most fragile deep-sea ecosystems in the Atlantic. There are species of marine life found in this area that don't exist anywhere else in the world, and that's something worth saving."
