Congressman John Fleming, M.D. released the following statement in celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Hyde amendment, long-standing federal policy that prohibits taxpayer dollars from funding abortions.
"The forethought of Rep. Henry Hyde's amendment has been instrumental in saving the lives of approximately 2 million innocent children. First enacted on September 30, 1976, babies given the chance at life under this critical federal policy are now mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, daughters and sons. Once thought inconvenient, 40 years later these men and women are the voice of generations of Americans.
"A majority of Americans agree that the government should not be funding abortions, a procedure that destroys developing human life--lives full of potential. This is why I support sending the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion bill to the President's desk, enshrining the life-affirming Hyde amendment into permanent law."
