Rep. Todd Young Statement on Administration Granting Citizenship to Hundreds With Deportation Orders

Congressman Todd Young (R-IN) issued the following statement after an Inspector General report found as many as 1,811 individuals with deportation orders did not receive appropriate vetting and may have erroneously been granted U.S. citizenship:

"The Administration's failure to acquire pertinent background information and thoroughly vet these individuals identified an alarming flaw in our immigration system," said Young. "The Department of Homeland Security provided incomplete information to immigration officials tasked with identifying national security risks. There is simply no excuse for a breakdown of this magnitude, for the left hand to have no idea what the right hand is doing. Current consensus is the immigration system in our country is unworkable, yet we do too little to fix it. The Administration must immediately review its case files to identify individuals who fraudulently obtained citizenship in the United States and then close the gaps in the vetting process. Not only to provide security assurances to the American people, but to give individuals who would choose to become citizens legally and with dignity, a clearer path to do so under a system that works."
