Issue Position

Gustavo Rivera knows that our criminal justice system does not treat all New Yorkers as equals. Since becoming a State Senator, he has worked to implement policies that both safeguard public safety while addressing some of the practices that lead to the unjust treatment of a number of New Yorkers. Gustavo also knows that having strong relationship between our community and police is crucial to having safer streets and a safer community.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

Passed the Charitable Bail Law, which has helped hundreds of Bronxites post bail for misdemeanors, keeping them out jail while awaiting trial.

Secured $6 million to transform the Fulton Correctional Facility in Crotona Park into a unique reentry facility for those returning to the city from prison.

Fought to pass a bill to give the Attorney General jurisdiction to investigate cases involving a police officer that resulting in the death or injury of a citizen.

Helped pass the New York SAFE Act, which put in place the strictest gun control laws in the country.

Hosted a series of public safety workshops on issues of bullying, gang violence, stop and frisk and domestic violence.

Attends precinct council meetings and maintains constant contact with Commanding Officers in the Bronx regarding crime and crime prevention
