Ayotte Highlights Unanswered Questions About Rahami's Trips to Afghanistan, Pakistan

In a Fox News interview with host Martha MacCallum this morning, U.S. Senator Kelly Ayotte discussed the ongoing investigations into the recent terrorist attacks in New York, New Jersey, and Minnesota. Ayotte highlighted the number of unanswered questions that surround Ahmad Khan Rahami's - the New York and New Jersey bombing suspect - travel to Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Ayotte: "...As I see the [Rahami] trips to Afghanistan and Pakistan, the question becomes you know, why wasn't that more thoroughly looked at? I think right now: did [Rahami] have ties with any extremist groups that are there? A number of terrorist groups that are in those countries, and did anyone there help [teach] him how to make explosives? ... Why wasn't there more thorough questioning at [the] time with his trips?... The Taliban, the Haqqani Network, the presence of ISIS in those countries-those raise real questions. We need to get to the bottom of it."

MacCallum: "...Is there a way to make it somewhat easier within the laws of this country to keep a tab on these people?"

Ayotte: "Well, one thing we should do is make sure [the] FBI has tools it needs...Obviously, we need to make sure our law enforcement have the tools they need to go after terrorists, and that's got to be clear...Local law enforcement, they need to know what is going on too. They're most likely to encounter the individuals on first instance."
