U.S. Senator Kelly Ayotte released the following statement in response to North Korea's nuclear test:

"North Korea's nuclear weapons, combined with their ballistic missile program, represent a direct threat to the national security interests of the United States and our allies, and this most recent detonation underscores the serious need for tougher sanctions and better enforcement of existing sanctions. The sanctions passed this year were a positive step, but tough talk from the Obama administration is not enough-we need rigorous enforcement of sanctions, especially against Chinese entities that continue to engage in prohibited activities with North Korea."
