Guantanamo Bay Bill Prevents Further Transfer of Detainees

Statement

Congressman Kevin Cramer released this statement following the House of Representatives passing a bill today prohibiting the transfer of Guantanamo Bay military prison detainees. Cramer is a co-sponsor of H.R. 5351, temporarily prohibiting any funds from being used to transfer or release the detainees at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to the United States or a foreign country until Jan. 21, 2017, or the enactment of the National Defense Appropriations Act for fiscal year 2017. An amendment to the appropriations bill passed in June prevents detainees from being transferred to U.S. prisons, as does similar language in the National Defense Authorization Act for fiscal year 2017 passed by the House in May.

"Once again, the House has felt obligated to pass a bill blocking any further release of Guantanamo Bay detainees. The fact Congress has already passed legislation that has been signed into law preventing this transfer doesn't seem to be adequate. President Obama has repeatedly stated his desire to move ahead with his misguided promise to release all Gitmo detainees. This bill further affirms the sense of the House that the rights of dangerous terrorists must not be put ahead of the safety of American citizens."
