Issue Position: Protecting Our Residents and Environment

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2016

We have a unique way of life on the Cape and Islands - one that we need to protect. This means funding the town services and infrastructure necessary for maintaining our quality of life. My perspective in entering state government is that towns need a partner, not a boss - someone to clear the road ahead rather than erect roadblocks. We must also ensure that our natural environment remains pristine for generations to come. I believe we can create a sustainable future for our region through smart investments and commonsense solutions that work for all of us. As the next Senator from the Cape and Islands, I will advocate to:

*Push for the immediate closure and swift decommissioning of Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station
*Retool state standards to respond to our unique geography and hydrology, including provisions that protect our sole-source aquifer from pesticides and emerging contaminants and mitigate nitrogen and fertilizers in our waterways
*Consider local options to pay for critical infrastructure needs without relying on property tax increases, such as an expanded room occupancy tax to fund wastewater investments
*Support renewable energy generation and seek innovative ways to combat climate change
