Rubio: Landmark Everglades Project Clears Last Major Hurdle In Senate

U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) welcomed the Senate's continued advancement of the Central Everglades Planning Project (CEPP), as well as three more Florida provisions included in the Water Resources Development Act (WRDA).

Rubio voted this afternoon in support of closing debate on WRDA and proceeding to a vote on final passage, which is expected as early as tomorrow.

"After many years, this landmark Everglades restoration and water quality improvement project has cleared its last major hurdle in the Senate and should pass as early as tomorrow," said Rubio. "I'm proud of the work Senator Bill Nelson and I have done on this issue during my time in the Senate, and I'm especially grateful to Chairman Jim Inhofe for having an open mind, recognizing the merits of this Everglades project and including it in this water bill.

"With this final hurdle cleared in the Senate and this Everglades project further along in the process than ever before, it's time to start turning our attention to the U.S. House of Representatives, which needs to do its part in order for this to become law," Rubio added.

In addition to CEPP, the WRDA bill contains three additional Florida measures because of Rubio's work. One measure, Rubio's Assessing Coastal Areas to Assist States Act, authorizes the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to perform an assessment of coastlines within the South Atlantic Division. A second measure will ensure an important Everglades project is able to move forward with a needed budget modification. The third measure is an important study of flooding in Daytona Beach.
