Issue Position

As a member of the United States House of Representatives, Congressman Lynch has worked closely on trade issues. He has engaged with administration officials to ensure that the specific terms of trade deals are designed to create American jobs and raise wages here, while also ensuring that critical domestic environmental, consumer, and other public interest safeguards would not be undermined by the terms of any trade deals.

Along with his colleagues, he has carefully reviewed the draft text of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) as it has been made available to members of Congress. Congressman Lynch believes that the TPP is on the wrong track. This trade agreement includes several countries with abysmal records on human rights and labor and environmental protections. And the TPP does nothing to guarantee that these records will change. Instead, the current terms of the deal would continue the exploitation of foreign workers.

Congressman Lynch voted against "fast-track authority" because he does not think that Congress should give up its constitutional power to be engaged in the process. A vote for fast-track is a vote against transparency and a vote to take Congress out of the debate. Congress should be working to create American jobs, increase wages, and promote economic growth. The current TPP does the opposite. Congressman Lynch refuses to relinquish his right to fix a trade agreement that will export American jobs.
