Last week, the Puerto Rico debt crisis got very real as the government skipped a major debt payment -- its biggest default yet. And it's only going to get worse until Congress takes action.

Puerto Rico's debt crisis is causing turmoil not just on the island. It's affecting us right here in Central Florida.

Our ties to the island run deep. Our economies, our families, and our communities are interconnected. As Puerto Ricans on the island lose their jobs, suffer savage cuts to schools, hospitals and other vital services more and more will flee and seek refuge in our community. While we welcome our fellow new Puerto Rican residents, both regions would benefit from stabilizing the economy on the Island.

Here's the good news: Congress has a bipartisan plan on the table to solve the problem by allowing the island to restructure its debt just like states and municipalities can.

I support the plan to end the debt crisis and I urge Congress to pass it without delay. We need to lead on this issue and break through the dysfunction to solve this crisis, and others afflicting our country. That's the kind of approach we need in Congress right now, and that's what I intend to bring to the table as Central Florida's representative.
