HBCU Preservation Bill Passed by House of Representatives

On Monday, September 12, 2016, the U.S. House of Representatives passed legislation, H.R. 295, to provide federal funds for the maintenance, restoration and preservation of historic buildings on Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) campuses. Following passage, U.S. Congresswoman Joyce Beatty (OH-03), a graduate of HBCU Central State University and member of the Bipartisan Congressional HBCU Caucus, said:

"For more than a century, HBCUs have been at the forefront of preparing the next generation of African-American leaders. In Ohio, we are privileged to have two excellent HBCUs: Central State University and Wilberforce University. " Beatty said. "As a proud HBCU graduate of Central State University, I know firsthand the transformational effect HBCUs have on students, their families and alumni." Beatty continued, "I am proud to support H.R. 295 to ensure that HBCUs across the country have the needed resources to strengthen their facilities for current and future students."

Introduced by Assistant Democratic Leader James Clyburn (SC-06), H.R. 295 overwhelmingly passed--supported by Republican and Democratic Members of Congress--by voice vote. The bill now awaits further consideration by the U.S. Senate.
