U.S. Senate Again Blocks $1.1 Billion House Approved Zika Funding Measure

Iowa Congressman David Young released the following statement after the U.S. Senate for the third time failed to pass legislation containing funding to combat the Zika virus, which he supported and which passed by a bipartisan majority in the U.S. House of Representatives in June.

"I am deeply disappointed Senate Democrats are yet again playing partisan politics with the health of Americans by blocking much needed emergency funding to combat the Zika virus. This commonsense bipartisan solution works to protect our mothers and babies and is of utmost importance to the health of our communities, which is why I supported it when the House passed it in June. The critical bill provides $1.1 billion to address the Zika virus in a fiscally responsible way. The Senate must work quickly and pass this legislation to address this public health danger facing women and children across our nation."

Young's Efforts in Support of Zika Funding:

June 23, 2016: Congressman Young supported the bicameral conference report containing $1.1 billion in funding to address the Zika outbreak.
June 14, 2016: As Iowa's only member of the U.S House Appropriations Committee, Congressman Young voted to approve the Fiscal Year 2017 Labor, Health and Human Services (LHHS) funding bill which included additional funding targeted to combat the Zika virus.
April 12, 2016: Congressman Young supported the Adding Zika Virus to the FDA Priority Review Voucher Program Act (H.R. 4400), which was passed by the U.S. House of Representatives.
