Today, Congresswoman Janice Hahn (CA-44) and several of her PORT Caucus Congressional colleagues sent a letter to Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker urging her to step in to help solve the economic crisis caused by Hanjin Shipping's collapse and bankruptcy.
Hanjin container ships have been stranded outside the ports of Los Angeles, Long Beach and other West Coast ports without clear answers about whether the company will be able to pay local port workers and truck drivers to unload the cargo. Congresswoman Hahn and her colleagues have called on the Secretary of Commerce to begin talks with South Korea and Hanjin to come to an agreement that will guarantee local ports and workers will be paid for unloading the cargo.
"We are dealing with an unprecedented global crisis but the first thing we must focus on is getting the Hanjin crews to safety, getting these ships unloaded, and ensuring our local workers are paid," said Congresswoman Janice Hahn.
