"Upon learning that some of my constituents were trapped overseas, my team and I immediately started working to help get the Stinson family safely back to Tippecanoe County. My office has been in contact, and continues to be in contact, with family members and friends of the family. My team and I are determined to help in every way allowed by the family.
"I have been working with decision-makers at our consulate in Merida, Mexico on the situation. It is clear that the Consulate is aware of the situation and engaged at the highest levels. According to the Consulate I spoke with, the Stinson family will not be stopped from leaving, and are permitted to leave, the hospital. As part of my continued investigation, I am scheduled to speak with the Consulate again this evening.
In addition to conversations with Consulate officials, Congressman Rokita has issued a written request to Mrs. Stinson's insurer, AARP, to have its vendor issue a letter of guarantee for payment to the hospital, including coverage of an air ambulance service if necessary to safely extract Mrs. Stinson from Mexico. A copy of the letter can be found attached to this release.
"I'd like to take this opportunity to remind Hoosiers traveling abroad to have a plan in case unexpected medical emergencies occur while in a foreign county." The Smart Traveler Enrollment Program is a taxpayer-funded, free service within our State Department that offers comprehensive reports on places across the globe. Hoosier travelers are encouraged to contact the Congressman's offices if they encounter issues with navigating the State Department's information.
