Diaz-Balart Applauds Bolton Appointment to UN

WASHINGTON-Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart (R-Fla.) today applauded President Bush for appointing John Bolton to fill the vacant U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations post and chided Democrats for preventing an up-or-down vote on the Senate floor on Bolton's nomination.

"The United Nations is undeniably in grave need of massive reform," Diaz-Balart said. "John Bolton will bring the tough but honest talk necessary to make meaningful reforms within the troubled UN. He has been a stalwart on human rights and U.S. sovereignty, and I cannot think of anyone who would represent our nation's interests better.

"Unfortunately Senate Democrats chose to use Mr. Bolton as a pawn in their non-stop attacks on President Bush," Diaz-Balart continued. "By using vague and tenuous accusations, Democrats stalled a good man's career and overlooked the needs of this nation to have proper representation at the United Nations."

Senate Democrats have twice blocked an up-or-down vote on Bolton's nomination. Bolton's appointment will last until the 110th Congress convenes in 2007.
