NRA Endorses Jason Smith for U.S. Congress

Press Release

Date: July 14, 2016
Location: Cape Girardeau, MO
Issues: Guns

Today, U.S. Rep Jason Smith (MO-08) received the official endorsement and full support of the National Rifle Association Political Victory Fund (NRA-PVF). The National Rifle Association is the largest and most widely recognized Second Amendment advocacy and firearm education organization in the country.

The endorsement and "A" rating was granted to Smith ahead of the August primary and based on his voting record and support of Second Amendment issues. After receiving the NRA-PVF endorsement, Congressman Smith commented, "I am incredibly proud to receive the coveted "A" rating from the NRA and honored to have the backing of such a prominent organization, but it means even more as a hunter, sportsmen and strong supporter of youth hunting and education."

Smith went on to say, "The Second Amendment has been under assault by this administration and its liberal allies like never before, but I firmly believe it has also never been so crystal clear that clamping down on gun rights to law-abiding citizens is absolutely the wrong message and action we need to be taking. Restricting our personal freedoms is un-American, but doing it at a time when families and communities are feeling less safe from threats of terror is unconscionable."

The endorsement letter to Smith cited several specific votes and actions the Congressman took to earn the endorsement, specifically voting in favor of concealed carry reciprocity legislation, the Sportsmen's Heritage and Recreational Enhancement Act, and opposition to the Obama Administration's Operation Choke Point initiative. Smith also continually received the backing of the NRA while in the Missouri legislature where he supported several pieces of legislation expanding second amendment rights and was the author of legislation that expanded protections under the Castle Doctrine.

In addition to protecting Second Amendment rights in legislatures across the country and on Capitol Hill the NRA also operates some of the most extensive firearm education and training programs throughout the country with specific programs tailored to woman, youth, law enforcement and competition shooters.
