We need a smart and tough foreign policy agenda that seeks to protect the United States and at the same time preserves the shared American values of privacy, liberty, and diversity.
We should equip our military personnel with the 21st century tools they need to defend our nation as well as eliminate terrorist threats as efficiently and safely as possible. That means supporting the use of innovative technologies, fully updating and improving our cybersecurity infrastructure, and ensuring that our military and intelligence officials have access to every tool they need to protect our nation.
We also must appreciate the role that diplomacy plays in keeping our country safe. We must form and nurture strong relationships with our allies. Although there are times when our military must act alone, we are strongest and most effective when we can join forces with our allies.
In this effort, we must stay true to our American values of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for all. When we reject those who are different from us and threaten to isolate ourselves from the rest of the world, we lose so much of what makes our country the greatest, most innovative, and powerful nation on Earth. We know that our country is strongest and most economically successful when we embrace the diversity of our people and form commercial, political, and personal partnerships between Americans and the rest of the world. We must reject isolationist rhetoric and policies.
