Van Hollen Statement on the 51st Anniversary of the Voting Rights Act

Today Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen released the following statement marking the 51st anniversary of the Voting Rights Act, which was signed into law by President Lyndon Johnson on this day in 1965:

"A healthy democracy requires robust participation in our electoral process, but efforts to roll back access to the ballot box have undermined the inclusiveness of our political system. On this anniversary of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, we must express our unwavering support for a stronger America, which includes protecting and expanding the right to vote. I hope Democrats and Republicans can agree that the more voices we engage in the democratic process, the more representative our government becomes. That's why I strongly support the Voting Rights Advancement Act of 2015 to restore the full protections of the original, bipartisan Voting Rights Act."
