Senator John Hoeven stopped by Drayton, North Dakota to look at the town's levee system on Tuesday.

The visit comes after a six month extension agreement with FEMA that allows the town to leave the levees in place.

Hoeven says he is working to pass legislation that would allow towns like Drayton to keep existing levees as part of a permanent flood control project.

"The second thing I've suggested to the city leaders here, the mayor and the city leaders, is they may want to talk to the state water commission and see if there are some options then for rebuilding the levee once we have legal authority to do that on this land, in a way that would maybe reduce, or keep them from having to buy as much flood insurance," said Senator Hoeven.

Senator Hoeven says a decision should come by the end of the year.
