Statement on Istanbul, Turkey Terrorist Attack

Statement

Date: June 29, 2016

Following yesterday's terrorist attack at Istanbul's Ataturk Airport, the third-largest airport in Europe, Don Bacon issued the following statement:
"Our condolences and prayers go out to the families and loved ones of those killed and injured in Istanbul. We wish the injured a speedy recovery. Turkey has been our NATO ally and partner, and we must work with our ally to defeat ISIS that presents a worldwide threat.
This is the latest of too many heinous attacks, and we must know that ISIS intends to conduct more. This is part of their ideology and why we must take aggressive action to defeat them. These attacks are not an aberration, but our reality until ISIS is defeated. Any geographical area that ISIS controls will be an incubator for future attacks and, therefore, we must take the fight to where ISIS is operating. Removing any safe haven boosts our safety here at home.
Defeating ISIS will require assertive leadership on our part to build a coalition that can defeat ISIS in Syria, Iraq and Libya. Our regional partners should take the lead on the ground with heavy support from our air, intelligence, special forces and command and control. Simultaneously, we must target ISIS' financing and recruiting, while working to undermine the ideology that is radicalizing too many. ISIS recruits an average of 30 terrorists a day and we must counter this to ultimately win.
The administration continues to do too little, too late, which leaves our nation at increased risk. Leading from behind has left ISIS a worldwide threat and has put Iran in the driver's seat in Iraq, Syria and in portions of the Arabian Peninsula. Iran's growing strength has undermined our ability to galvanize Sunni nations to defeat ISIS because they see Iran as the larger long-term threat. Our strategy with Iran has hurt our ability to defeat to ISIS.
Despite what my opponent says, we have not turned the tide on ISIS. Our CIA Director has said the same, and ISIS actions speak the loudest. We need more folks in Congress who have experienced the Middle East and Islamic extremism first hand, and who understand counterterrorism and the needs of our military. I had four deployments to the Middle East and look forward to being a strong leader in building a winning strategy against ISIS as the senior ranking retired officer in the House of Representatives."
