Issue Position: Protect Our Independent Judiciary from Partisan Ideological Attacks

Issue Position

Respect for the separation and balance of power between the three branches of government is essential to the rule of law. We should all be disturbed by the recent right wing political attacks on the Kansas Supreme Court. I oppose the recent attempts to add purely political grounds for impeaching Kansas Supreme Court Justices. And I support the merit selection process for Justices. Brownback and his allies have sought to replace the merit system with a more political process that involves only the Governor and the legislature, with the aim of packing the court with judges that meet political litmus tests rather than those who have earned the respect of experts in the legal field.
