Van Hollen Statement on OMB's Mid-Session Review

Statement

Date: July 15, 2016
Location: Washington, DC

Today Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen, Ranking Member of the House Budget Committee, issued the following statement on the Congressional Budget Office's (CBO) Mid-Session Review, which found current deficits slightly lower than expected and well below levels during the economic downturn:

"Today's report underscores the progress we have made since the great recession and the work that is still necessary to grow our economy. It provides further evidence that we can make critical investments in national and economic security priorities while keeping the nation on a fiscally sustainable path.

"Armed with these facts, you'd think Congress would be able to act. But Washington Republicans failed to pass a budget this year and have prevented any meaningful investment in America's future. In fact, they have succeeded only in making our fiscal outlook shakier by passing $600 billion in unpaid-for tax breaks late last year. Once again, the GOP put special interests first and left working families to foot the bill. Democrats will continue to fight for an economy that rewards hard work and extends the ladder of opportunity to all, not just the wealthy few."
