Sessions Defends the Constitution and Fights to Reassert Congressional Authority

Statement

U.S. Congressman Pete Sessions (R-TX), chairman of the House Rules Committee, today issued the following statement after voting in favor of a bill to stop this Administration's continued overreach and reassert Congress' constitutional authority:

"The Framers of our Constitution thoughtfully and deliberately designed our system of government, creating three separate branches to maintain a system of checks and balances and prevent a centralization of power. Unfortunately, this system is being threatened and abused by a Supreme Court decision that empowered unelected bureaucrats to interpret the laws that we as lawmakers, the representative voice of the American people, have passed. This decision violated the intent of our framers by allowing federal agencies to make their own rules, including the Environmental Protection Agency justifying their egregious overreach with the Clean Power Plan, to the Federal Communication Commission's regulatory power grab in net neutrality rules, and most recently, the guidance from the Department of Education and Department of Justice's locker room decision.

"The facts of the case are plain and simple, unelected bureaucrats should not have the authority to interpret the law as they wish. This common sense bill will ensure that Congress, not faceless unelected bureaucrats, write the law in order to protect congressional intent, reassert our Article 1 legislative authority and rebalance the scales of power back to how the framers intended."
