Deborah is a long-time proponent of protecting our environment and natural resources. A strong environmental champion, Deborah earned a 94 percent lifetime score on the North Carolina League of Conservation Voters' Legislative Scorecard. She voted repeatedly to support clean energy, oppose fracking, address climate change, and protect North Carolina's land, air and water.
Deborah supported tax credits for businesses that invested in renewable energy and advocated for smart environmental policy that also supported economic development. She fought against attempts to ban North Carolina from basing coastal policies on outdated sea level predictions and supported legislation preventing manufacturers from deceiving customers about the biodegradability of their goods.
As a lawyer, she helped renewable energy companies create jobs and generate electricity throughout the state.
Our mountains and coasts are not just national treasures, they are a part of North Carolina's vital tourism industry. Each year visitors spend billions in our state, help sustain hundreds of thousands of jobs, and provide a huge boon to our real estate market. To protect these national treasures and bolster our tourism economy, Deborah knows that we need to slow the harmful effects of climate change. One of the best ways to do this is to invest in renewable energy and clean technology.
Knowing there is too much at risk, Deborah will never support oil drilling off the North Carolina coast, and she'll continue to stand up for what's right for North Carolina's tourism and fishing industries.
In 2013, the North Carolina League of Conservation Voters gave Deborah the Defender of the Environment Award, and she's proud to have their support again for U.S. Senate.
