Deborah learned the value of education at a young age from her mom, a preschool teacher. In junior high, Deborah's American history class became the foundation for her lasting interest in public service. Deborah has spent time in front of the classroom as a senior lecturing fellow at Duke University Law School.
Deborah believes that in order to strengthen our economy every child needs access to a high-quality education, starting with early learning, K-12 education, and the opportunity to attend a community college or a four-year college. A good education allows North Carolinians to get the skills they need to find a job or start businesses. They are then able to buy houses, put money back into the local economy, support their families, and save for retirement.

In North Carolina's State House, Deborah sponsored legislation to establish a college grant fund for economically disadvantaged students, supported measures to allocate more state lottery funds to underserved public schools and sponsored tax deductions for families saving for college.

As a U.S. Senator, Deborah will continue to prioritize education. Inclusive, accessible, and affordable education enriches students, grows our economy, and keeps our nation globally competitive. She is focused on strengthening early education, investing in our public schools, and making college and student loans more affordable.
