Today is the Unfortunate Anniversary of Garrett's Bigotry

One year ago, July 16, 2015, Politico made a shocking discovery about Tea Partier Scott Garrett: his anti-gay bigotry. That day, they reported that Garrett, to the surprise of many of his fellow Republicans, refused to pay his Republican Party dues because the Party had backed gay candidates for Congress.

Politico reported, "Garrett first responded that his procedural vote against leadership was a matter of conscience. Then he stunned the room with this explanation: He had not supported the NRCC in the past, he said, because it actively recruited gay candidates and supported homosexuals in primaries."

As a result, in a scathing editorial, The New Jersey Star-Ledger criticized Garrett stating, "Make no mistake: Garrett's position is the moral equivalent of excluding African-American candidates, or women, or Latinos." Adding later, "Our hope is that Garrett's days are numbered, and that this shameful episode starts that ball rolling."

On March 28th, 2016, the Star-Ledger editorial board again hit Garrett for his anti-gay views, calling Garrett a "shameless bigot."

Over the past year, nine companies have publicly committed to never contribute to Scott Garrett again, including: BBVA Compass, Capital One, First Energy, Goldman Sachs, Nomura Holding, PNC, State Farm, US Bancorp, and UBS.

"We shouldn't have to mark a day on the calendar to remember Scott Garrett's bigotry because we shouldn't have a Congressman who is a bigot, period," Josh Gottheimer, Congressional Candidate in the Fifth District, said.
