Ayotte Statement on President's Afghanistan Announcement

U.S. Senator Kelly Ayotte, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, today released the following statement regarding President Obama's announcement that he plans to keep 8,400 troops in Afghanistan through the end of his term:

"I appreciate the President's willingness to revise his calendar-based drawdown of troops in Afghanistan that would have incurred serious and unnecessary risks, but I continue to believe that our military posture there should be based on the facts on the ground, the advice of our commanders, and our national security interests. Additionally, I would like an explanation from our military leaders to fully understand the military rationale for reducing U.S. forces there by about 1,400 troops, in light of the continuing security challenges and the need to ensure Afghanistan never again becomes a launching pad for terrorist attacks against the United States."
