Bill Naming Post Office in Honor of Nebraska Hero Passes Senate

Last night, the U.S. Senate unanimously approved legislation in honor of Petty Officer 1st Class Caleb A. Nelson of Omaha, Nebraska. The bill would designate the United States Postal Service facility located at 5720 South 142nd Street in Omaha, Nebraska, as the "Petty Officer 1st Class Caleb A. Nelson Post Office Building." It now heads to the president's desk for his signature. Officer Nelson was killed in Afghanistan on October 1, 2011 after his vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device.

U.S. Senator Deb Fischer (R-Neb.) released the following statement applauding the passage of the bill this evening:

"Officer Nelson served his country with honor, and last night, the U.S. Senate formally recognized his sacrifice to our nation. By dedicating this post office in his memory, Officer Nelson's legacy will live on and continue to inspire members of the Omaha community."

Petty Officer 1st Class (SO1) Nelson was born and raised in Omaha, Nebraska and graduated from the U.S. Navy's elite SEAL qualification training in 2006. SO1 Nelson was killed during combat patrol in Afghanistan in October 2011 when his vehicle was stuck by an improvised explosive device.

SO1 Nelson's awards and decorations include the Bronze Star with Valor, the Purple Heart, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Medal, Sea Service Ribbon (two awards), NATO Service Medal, Expert Rifle ribbon, and Expert Pistol ribbon.
