Issue Position: Preventing Gun Violence

Issues: Guns

As a mother of two, I worry about gun violence more than I ever should. The NRA has spent millions of dollars scaring politicians in Washington into inaction. Their money has bought them votes and left far too many families attending funerals instead of graduations. I'm running to stand up to the radicals who are putting campaign contributions above the lives of our children.

We need to figure out long-term solutions to this problem by putting much tougher restrictions on who can own a gun and what those guns can do. We need to put much more effort and resources behind fixing our mental health system.

But, right now, we need to quickly close loopholes that allow criminals to get their hands on guns with ease, increase background checks on everyone who wants to purchase a gun and institute a cooling off period so no one can purchase a gun without being vetted thoroughly.

And we need to invest in our communities. Every child has a right to grow up free from gun violence. To help achieve this we need to improve education, create jobs locally and make sure our police are working with our communities to make them safe places for our families to thrive. To really make our neighborhoods safe, we need to be just as smart about crime and solutions to it as we are tough. The status quo just isn't working.
