Tammy Duckworth on Alton Sterling & Philando Castile Police-Involved Shooting Deaths

Statement

Date: July 7, 2016

Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth (IL-08) issued the following statement regarding the deaths of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, who were both killed in police-involved shootings this week:

"This week, Philando Castile and Alton Sterling were added to the already-too-long list of African-American men--some just young boys--taken from their families in fatal police-involved shootings. We cannot ignore these tragedies occurring across our nation and simply hope the systemic problems that cause them will just go away."

"The fact is that black men are more likely to die at the hands of police than white men, and our communities and constituents demand action. Congress owes it to the families of these men, and the families of the countless others, to restore trust in law enforcement. So let's get to work on reforming our criminal justice system by requiring independent investigations of police-involved shootings, increasing the use of body-cameras and preventing police over-militarization."
