Senior Wellness and Security Expos for Iowans

Press Release

Date: July 8, 2016
Issues: Senior Citizens

Iowans know our seniors provide a strong foundation in our communities. Whether parents or grandparents, friends or neighbors, our seniors across the country impart life lessons and wisdom. They have and continue to contribute lifetimes of experience as teachers, doctors, service men and women and more, and make our communities and nation so great. As our loved ones age, it's our responsibility to make sure they are able to live well, by ensuring they have access to the information and resources they need.

With this in mind, earlier this week I announced I organized and will host Iowa Senior Wellness and Security Expos to help connect Iowa seniors, their families, and caretakers with the variety of services and resources available to them. These expos are free of charge and all Iowans are welcome to attend. The expos will take place in Des Moines on July 19th, Creston on July 20th and Council Bluffs on July 21st and will provide attendees with a one-stop-shop of local, regional, state and federal services.

At each expo, healthcare professionals will provide free health screenings, and knowledgeable volunteers will assist with prescription drug disposal. If you need help with casework or navigating federal government bureaucracy, staff members from my office will be ready and able to assist you on site.

Each of the three expos will also include presentations on Social Security and Medicare, online safety for seniors, and how to identify, avoid and protect against ever-growing threats from scammers and fraudsters. These presentations will be led by expert panels and will consist of valuable information you won't want to miss.

Representatives from over 50 organizations plan to attend the events in Des Moines, Creston and Council Bluffs, and the momentum and interest is only growing! Folks from AARP, Facebook, the Iowa Attorney General's office, the Iowa Insurance Division, the Social Security Administration, and many more plan to join us at the three expos.

I'm encouraged the Senior Wellness and Security Expos are yet another way for me to assist our seniors in the Third Congressional District. In Congress, I've worked hard to author and support legislation which looks out for our seniors in our communities. For example, I recently introduced the Protecting Older Workers Against Discrimination Act, bipartisan legislation to protect our hardworking senior workers, strengthen job security for American families, and hold bad actors accountable for shady hiring and business practices.

Again, I hope you are able to join me in Des Moines, Council Bluffs, or Creston later this month. I'm committed to looking out for all of our Iowa seniors and look forward to seeing you at my Senior Wellness and Security Expos where we will be able to connect folks with the support, resources and information Iowans need. If you have any questions regarding these events, please contact my Des Moines constituent services office at (515) 282-1909.
