Adriano Espaillat on Puerto Rico Debt Restructuring Deal

Statement

"Puerto Rico's 3.5 million American citizens have been left waiting in a sea of uncertainty, not knowing if a service they rely on would be shuttered, or their job cut. People have left in large numbers, and others are being forced to consider leaving their homes. Legislation announced today represents a set of preliminary solutions that would allow debt to be restructured, while committing to fund pensions, a critical provision. This bill is not perfect and I am firmly opposed to any minimum wage decrease. However, I stand with Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez in calling for this legislation to be quickly approved. We must take this step forward with the understanding that it is only the first step in a long recovery, that as congressman I will work tirelessly to aid."
