STATEMENT OF REP. CLEAVER ON THE RETIREMENT OF SUPREME COURT JUSTICE SANDRA DAY O'CONNOR
July 1, 2005
Below is a statement from Congressman Emanuel Cleaver, II on the retirement of Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor
(Washington, DC)-"I applaud Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor on her distinguished career as a public servant and wish her the best in her retirement. Justice O'Connor forged many new trails, and her legacy as the first woman to serve on the United States Supreme Court will long be remembered. She has been a voice of reason on the Supreme Court, defending a woman's right to choose, protecting personal privacy and preserving our Constitutional rights.
I encourage President Bush to remember the principles of Justice O'Connor when nominating a new Supreme Court Justice. Now, more than ever, our country needs unity, not more division. The President should consult with members of both parties to select a moderate, mainstream nominee who will protect the civil and Constitutional rights of all Americans."
