Congressman Thompson Calls Supreme Court Decision 'A Defeat For Individual Private Property Rights'

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, United States Representative Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS) released the following statement:

"Anytime a private property owner has their land taken by the government to build a shopping mall or for some other non-public interest, the government has gone too far. Local units of government have used eminent domain to take land, particularly from low-income citizens who have not had the wherewithal to defend themselves. Whether it's building a shopping mall, an auto assembly plant or a baseball stadium, the rich should not get richer at the expense of the poor.

"The recent Supreme Court decision is disturbing and serves as a defeat for individual private property rights. While the government should advance the public interests, it should not forsake the local communities in favor of private economic developers."
