Congressman Aderholt Statement on Retirement of Justice Sandra Day O'Connor

WASHINGTON, DC, July 1, 2005 -- Congressman Robert Aderholt (R-Haleyville) today made the following statement on the retirement of United States Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor:

"Justice O'Connor has served her country well and her service is greatly appreciated. Her retirement marks the first time in more than a decade that a President has had the opportunity to appoint someone to our Nation's highest court.

"I plan to follow the selection of the next U.S. Supreme Court Justice very closely. It is imperative that the next justice be someone who will strictly interpret the Constitution and who has an appreciation of the values that the founders believed so strongly in.

"Despite the contentious atmosphere that has recently accompanied the Senate confirmation process, I am hopeful that such a candidate will receive a fair and timely hearing and an up or down vote."
