Dear Editor:

This week, more than 500 athletes from across the United States are gathering in the Twin Cities to compete in the 25th National Veterans Wheelchair Games. This is the largest annual wheelchair sports event in the world, bringing together athletes who are experienced, world-class Paralympic competitors as well as veterans recently injured in Iraq and Afghanistan and other conflicts. As they compete, these athletes are proving that severe physical disability cannot diminish the human spirit.

Veterans all across the country are familiar with the excellent care provided at Minneapolis VA Medical Center. The center cares for injured soldiers returning from Iraq with multiple traumatic injuries, and will soon be home to a new spinal cord injury center.

Let's applaud the Paralyzed Veterans of America and the Veterans Administration for bringing the 25th Anniversary Wheelchair games to the Twin Cities. All of the athletes competing here this week deserve to be commended for their brave service to our nation and their athletic spirit.
