Van Hollen Statement on Return of Funds Improperly Seized from South Mountain Creamery

Statement

Date: June 30, 2016
Location: Washington, DC

Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen released the following statement after the owners of South Mountain Creamery in Frederick County received news that money improperly seized from their bank account by the federal government will be returned in full:

"I want to congratulate Randy and Karen Sowers for prevailing against the IRS for seizing funds from their dairy business. After a long fought battle, the IRS finally returned all the money owed to them. I applaud the House Ways and Means Committee for their bipartisan oversight and for shining a light on the overzealous actions in this case. Congressmen Roskam and Crowley have introduced a bill, the Clyde-Hirch-Sowers RESPECT Act, which I have cosponsored that would stop this misguided asset seizure practice."
