Statement from Governor Hassan on Bipartisan Executive Council Vote to Approve Police Standards and Training Council and NAMI Contract

Governor Maggie Hassan issued the following statement after today's bipartisan vote by the Executive Council approving a Police Standards and Training Council contract with NAMI:

"Public safety is our most important responsibility as a state, and well-trained law enforcement officers are key to maintaining New Hampshire's status as one of the safest states in the nation. The Police Standards and Training Council has been at the forefront of helping prepare law enforcement officers to address the challenges and dangers that they face every day, including responding to the heroin and opioid crisis and our strained mental health system.

"As we work to strengthen community-based mental health care, it is critical that we prepare our law enforcement officers to respond to those in crisis suffering from mental illness. I thank the Executive Council for approving this contract to allow the Police Standards and Training Council to continue working with the National Alliance on Mental Illness -- New Hampshire to provide instruction to our law enforcement officers on mental health training, which helps to strengthen public safety and builds on our efforts to support those with mental illness."
