Statement from Governor Hassan on Signing Bill Providing Funding to Police Standards and Training

Statement

Governor Maggie Hassan issued the following statement after today signing House Bill 1428, which provides funding to the Police Standards and Training Council and supports municipal water treatment projects:

"Public safety is our most important responsibility as a state, and our well-trained law enforcement officers are critical to keeping New Hampshire one of the safest states in the nation. As our dedicated law enforcement community works to combat the heroin and opioid crisis and the evolving and unique threats posed by recent acts of lone-wolf terrorism, gun violence and mass shootings across the country, we must ensure that law enforcement has the resources it needs to keep our people, our communities and our state safe.

"The Police Standards and Training Council has been at the forefront of helping prepare our brave law enforcement officers to meet the challenges and dangers that they face every day, and House Bill 1428 provides critical funding to ensure that the Council can continue its important mission of training our law enforcement officers.

"In addition, this bipartisan bill takes important steps to ensure that all of our residents and visitors have access to clean air, clean water, and a healthy environment, which is critical to public health and a strong economy. It supports municipalities in our work to ensure access to clean water by providing funding for existing water treatment projects to communities, which I originally proposed in the budget process last year. And it also develops strong standards and testing requirements to protect our environment from wood combustion, addressing my concerns with a bill that I vetoed earlier this year, Senate Bill 381.

"House Bill 1428 will allow New Hampshire to continue our strong practice of unified training and community policing and will help protect the natural resources that are critical to our economy and high quality of life, and I am proud to sign this bipartisan bill into law."
