Governor Hassan's Statement on Sustained Veto of HB 1637

Statement

Following the New Hampshire House of Representatives sustaining her veto of House Bill 1637, Governor Maggie Hassan issued the following statement:

"Ensuring a strong and robust public education system for all New Hampshire students is critical to preparing our young people for success in the 21st century innovation economy. House Bill 1637 would have clearly violated New Hampshire's Constitution, which prohibits public tax dollars from being used for religious schools. It also lacked mechanisms to protect every student's constitutional right to the opportunity to receive an adequate education, by diverting public funds to schools without the same accountability standards as public schools, which is also a clear violation of the requirements of state law and the state Constitution. We should not strip students of their constitutional right to the opportunity to receive an adequate education. Instead, we should be focused on continually improving the education we offer our children and ensuring a strong public education system where all New Hampshire students have the opportunity to thrive."
