Statement from Governor Hassan on Sustained Veto of HB 1266

Following the New Hampshire House of Representatives sustaining her veto of House Bill 1266, Governor Maggie Hassan issued the following statement:

"Ensuring the health and safety of citizens is the first responsibility of state government. In New Hampshire, we have a long tradition of a balanced regulatory approach when it comes to our fireworks industry, an approach that focuses on minimizing risk to public safety and protecting all citizens' quality of life. Because of the threat firecrackers pose to public safety, high risk of injury and the potential disruption to other citizens, the legalization of firecrackers as proposed in House Bill 1266 was opposed by the New Hampshire Association of Fire Chiefs and the New Hampshire Fire Marshal's Office. Instead of increasing access to one of the most dangerous types of fireworks, we must continue working together to protect the safety of our citizens, our communities and our state."
