Statement from Governor Hassan on Signing Senate Bill 406

Governor Maggie Hassan issued the following statement after today signing Senate Bill 406, which makes appropriations to the Department of Corrections to add six full body scanners for use in state correctional facilities and to the Department of Justice to administer grants to offset a portion of the cost of fully body scanners for county correctional facilities:

"Preventing illicit substances from entering state prisons is important to combating the heroin and opioid crisis, and body scanners can be an important tool to help prevent dangerous and addictive illicit substances from entering state correctional facilities and ending up in the hands of prisoners. As the process to purchase and implement the use of body scanners in state correctional facilities begins, we must be thorough in our research and work to ensure that we are using cost-effective practices and that the concerns of hard-working state employees are taken into account for practical implementation."
