Gov. Rounds Announces Canistota Capital for a Day Program

Gov. Mike Rounds announced today that he plans to visit Canistota on Wednesday, July 20, 2005, during his 2005 Capital for a Day tour. The public is invited to join the activities starting at 3:30 p.m. (CDT) at the Canistota School.

"Capital for a Day brings government to the local community," said Gov. Rounds. "It allows people who are unable to travel to Pierre an opportunity to discuss their issues with the representatives of the different agencies. It also gives state employees a chance to learn more about activities in the region. I'm looking forward to visiting the growing community of Canistota to speak with all of the people living in and around the area and to learn about the issues important to them."

"Capital for a Day is a fantastic opportunity to personally interact with our elected officials and government's staff on a one-on-one level," said Mayor Joel Weidenbach. "I'm encouraging Canistota citizens to mark July 20 on their calendar. They should plan to participate in the activities and interact with the various departments as the business of state government is conducted in our community."

The day's schedule of events is as follows:

* 1 - 3 p.m. (CT): Department meetings and tours, Canistota community
* 3:30 - 5:30 p.m.: Capital for a Day booths, Canistota School - Gymnasium

Governor Rounds & Cabinet are available to the public.

* 4 - 4:30 p.m.: First Lady's Reach Out and Read, Canistota School - Library

One of First Lady Jean Rounds' initiatives is to share the joys of reading with children starting at a young age. Children are invited to join her for story time at the library.

* 5:30 - 6:30 p.m.: Community Dinner, Canistota School - Gymnasium

The community is invited to eat with all Capital for a Day participants. The city is sponsoring the free meal and distributing advance tickets.

* 6:30 p.m.: Governor Mike Rounds, Canistota School - Gymnasium

The governor will speak briefly, and then ask for questions and advice from the community.

Gov. Rounds and his staff, cabinet, and agencies also plan to visit the following communities in 2005:

* Eureka: August
* Platte: September

Since 2003, Gov. Rounds and his team have traveled to 14 communities across South Dakota for Capital for a Day events. These communities include: Brookings, Sturgis, Wessington Springs, Lemmon, Aberdeen, Hot Springs, Yankton, Faith, Britton, Wall, Chamberlain, Vermillion, Sisseton, and Martin.
