Congressman Jim Himes made the following statement on the results of tonight's primaries and Hillary Clinton winning the Democratic nomination:
"Tonight, with another string of victories across the country, Hillary Clinton has secured the Democratic Party nomination for President of the United States. By winning the national popular vote and the most pledged delegates, Secretary Clinton has shown herself to be the person best poised to lead our country and continue the progress we have made over the past 8 years.
"This primary season energized millions of Democratic voters, due in no small part to the efforts of Senator Bernie Sanders. Senator Sanders has been a passionate voice for many who have been traditionally underrepresented in our political process and has made valuable contributions to the national debate on inequality and justice. I am optimistic that we can transfer and maintain that enthusiasm to rally behind Secretary Clinton now that she is the presumptive nominee.
"Our primary focus now must be defeating Donald Trump in the general election. Mr. Trump is a dangerous demagogue running a racist and divisive campaign. The positions he espouses are inconsistent with the values and basic decency that define us as Americans. We must work together, building on our common strengths and resolving our differences, to ensure Donald Trump is resoundingly beaten.
"Hillary Clinton will bring an unprecedented level of competence and experience to the Presidency. With her leadership we will continue to build a stronger, safer, more prosperous nation."
