Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth (IL-08) issued the following statement on Secretary of Defense Ash Carter's announcement that transgender people will be allowed to serve openly in the U.S. military.

"When my Black Hawk helicopter was shot down in Iraq, I didn't care if the people risking their lives to help save me were gay, straight, transgender or anything else. All that mattered was they didn't leave me behind. If you can do the job and are willing to put your life on the line for others, then we shouldn't stop you. I'm glad the Pentagon is finally lifting the ban on transgender service, it's an important and long-overdue step."
