Ayotte Joins Resolution to Commemorate National Police Week, Highlights Support for Law Enforcement

U.S. Senator Kelly Ayotte announced today that she has cosponsored a Senate Resolution commemorating National Police Week, which takes place from May 15-21, 2016. The Resolution was introduced by Senators Chuck Grassley (R-IA) and Patrick Leahy (D-VT).
"Our public safety and law enforcement officials put their lives on the line every day to keep us safe, and this week, we remember those brave individuals who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty," said Senator Ayotte. "I will always stand up for New Hampshire's men and women in uniform - and their families - as they protect and serve our great state."
Ayotte has led on several legislative efforts in order to ensure that public safety officers and their families receive the benefits and support they have earned. Along with Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Ayotte introduced the Don't Tax Our Fallen Public Safety Heroes Act in 2014, which was signed into law in 2015. This legislation clarifies that both federal and state death benefits for public safety officers should be treated the same and are not subject to federal income tax. She has also cosponsored the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Reauthorization Act and is leading efforts to improve the Public Safety Officers' Benefits (PSOB) program and fix long and burdensome benefits claims processing times and procedures. Ayotte has also cosponsored the Thin Blue Line Act to ensure that when an officer makes the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty, the judicial system has all the tools necessary to deliver justice for their families.
Ayotte is also working to ensure public safety officers have access to the tools they need to keep New Hampshire communities safe. She has introduced the bipartisan First Responder Anthrax Preparedness Act, cosponsored the Lifesaving Gear for Police Act, and has been leading efforts through legislation and other initiatives to support first responders, law enforcement officers, and other public safety officials as they respond to the heroin and prescription opioid abuse epidemic.
