NH Police Chiefs Urge Congress to Include CARA Provisions in Final Opioid Bill

U.S. Senator Kelly Ayotte today welcomed support for critical provisions in the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act (CARA) from a group of New Hampshire police chiefs. Last week, the chiefs sent a letter to conferees who will reconcile the Senate-passed CARA with a series of House-passed bills urging them to include major provisions from CARA in their final legislative text.

"Based on our experiences on the front lines of this epidemic, we believe that we must simultaneously work to ensure that appropriate policies focused on prevention, education, treatment, and support for individuals in recovery are in place to help support our work on the front lines every day," wrote the chiefs. "Because of this, we respectfully urge you to produce a final conference product that includes widely supported provisions in the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act (CARA) as soon as possible and send it to the president for his signature."

"I am so grateful to our law enforcement and first responders for the tireless work they do every day in the battle against the heroin and prescription opioid abuse epidemic," said Senator Ayotte. "Their call for a comprehensive federal response is a testament to how hard these men and women work - and how much they care about keeping their communities safe. I too urge the conferees to adopt the provisions in CARA so we can approach this crisis from all angles."
